How long does a Newborn Session take?

Congratulations! Your little one has arrived, and it’s time for their very first modeling session. As a Northern New Jersey newborn photographer, I understand that this can be a stressful time for parents, especially if it’s their first time taking their baby out for a photoshoot. That’s why I want to take a moment to explain what you can expect during a newborn photography session and why they typically take about 3 hours.

First of all, newborns are just starting to adapt to the outside world, so it might take them a while to settle down. They also tend to be extremely sleepy, which means they take longer to feed. This requires extra patience and persistence on our end, or from the parents. Additionally, some newborns may have colic or gas problems that make it harder for them to settle down. All of these factors can contribute to the length of the session. Our main priority during a newborn session is to keep both the baby and the parents as comfortable and stress-free as possible. That’s why we take our time and stop as many times as needed to achieve the best results.

Newborn sessions also involve family portraits. We typically start with mom and baby, then add in dad and baby, and finally, we wrap up the family portion by adding any older siblings to the portrait. Dads and siblings have the option to leave if they wish, while we continue posing the newborn in the presence of the mom. During the session, parents have the opportunity to sit back, relax, and enjoy a cup of coffee with some snacks while we photograph their little one.
