Your Bergen County Hospital Bag Checklist for a Med-Free Birth
Your Bergen County Hospital Bag Checklist for a Med-Free Birth
by Seta, Zartarel Photography – Bergen County Newborn Photography
If you’re planning a med-free birth here in Bergen County New Jersey, I have something you’re going to love!
I’m talking about packing your hospital bag—but not just any hospital bag checklist. This one is crafted specifically for Bergen County moms preparing for a med-free or natural birth.
I still remember packing my own hospital bag—feeling equal parts excited, nervous, and convinced I had too much and not enough at the same time. And yes… the one thing I didn’t think I’d need but ended up relying on? An extra robe. Trust me—pack the robe!
And hey, if you want to shop locally for cozy robes, nursing-friendly outfits, and mama-essentials, check out The Modern Child boutique in Ridgewood. They seriously have the warmest, softest pieces perfect for your hospital stay.
Ready to get started?
Let’s make sure your bag is packed with everything you need to feel empowered during your natural birth.
1. Fuel Your Body: Snacks + Hydration
Labor takes energy, especially during an unmedicated birth. Make sure you bring:
- High-protein snacks: granola bars, nuts, jerky, protein bites
- Easy-to-sip drinks: coconut water, electrolyte beverages
- Liquid IV or another electrolyte mix
- A large refillable water bottle
Staying hydrated and nourished helps maintain stamina during labor—especially during those longer overnight stretches.
2. Pack for Comfort During Labor
For a natural birth in Bergen County hospitals like Valley Hospital (Ridgewood) or Hackensack University Medical Center, comfort is everything.
Bring items that help keep you relaxed, grounded, and able to move freely:
- A loose-fitting nightgown or robe
- Soft towels and washcloths
- Unscented lotion
- Essential oils or calming tools
- A small diffuser or relaxation cards/affirmations
Sidebar: My favorite essential oil during labor was lavender—my doula also used clary sage and it made such a difference!
Local Pro Tip:
Valley Hospital does not provide peanut balls (I just gave birth there a year ago), so if you want one for labor positions, bring your own!
3. Don’t Forget Your Doula
She may not fit in your hospital bag, but she might help carry it for you!
A doula can provide grounding, physical comfort, and emotional support. Whether it’s counter-pressure, re-positioning suggestions, or helping you stay calm through contractions, doulas are incredible assets—especially for med-free births.
I’ve connected with so many amazing Bergen County doulas. https://www.thenestingplacenj.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=wix_google_business_profile&utm_campaign=11534150200116531921 Click here to see my top recommendation when it comes to Doulas and Prenatal support.
Having the right support team truly changes everything.
4. Breastfeeding Essentials
If you’re planning to breastfeed, pack these items:
- A nursing bra
- Nursing pads
- A nursing pillow
- Breast milk storage bags
- Lanolin cream
- A large water bottle
These will help you feel prepared and supported during those first precious feedings.
From my experience photographing new families, I’ve seen how helpful it is when moms bring a nursing pillow—it immediately takes the pressure off your arms and helps baby latch more comfortably.
5. For Water Births
If you’re planning a water birth, pack:
- A swimsuit or a top you don’t mind getting wet
- A large towel for after
- A small towel for your head or neck
- Hypnobirthing audio or meditation tracks
Local Insight:
Hackensack University Medical Center does offer labor tubs in certain rooms—but not all. If you’re hoping for water labor, ask ahead so your nurse can place you accordingly.
Water births can create an incredibly calming environment—warm water truly helps ease tension and contractions.
6. And Of Course… Your Birth Photographer
As a Newborn Photographer in New Jersey and a specialist in Bergen County Newborn Photography, this part is close to my heart.
Hiring a professional newborn photographer for your Fresh 48 photos offers you:
- Beautiful documentation from first day or two with your baby
- Professional, unobtrusive coverage
- Peace of mind knowing everything is being captured
- The ability to stay fully in the moment
If you’re considering a Fresh 48 photography session in the hospital, I would be honored to document your story.
