Newborn Session Prep Guide for New Jersey Lifestyle Newborn Photography

If you’ve booked a newborn session with me—or you’re planning to—thank you from the bottom of my heart. As a New Jersey lifestyle newborn photographer, it’s truly an honor to be welcomed into your home to capture this fleeting, beautiful stage of life.

Bringing a baby home is magical… and also a little wild. Between the sleepless nights, constant feeding, and brand-new routines, life can feel like a whirlwind. I’ll be joining you soon to document these first days in a relaxed, natural way, so I’ve put together this newborn session prep guide to help make your experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Take a deep breath—you don’t need to have everything perfect. Lifestyle newborn photography sessions in Bergen County and throughout New Jersey are slow, gentle, and completely flexible. Most sessions last around three hours, but much of that time is spent feeding, soothing, adjusting light, and easing baby into comfortable positions. There is absolutely no rush.

Below, you’ll find simple tips for preparing your home, your family, and your sweet new baby. Inquire here to book your New Jersey lifestyle newborn photography session

Preparing for Your Lifestyle Newborn Session in New Jersey

Preparing Your Space

For your in-home lifestyle newborn photography session, I’ll photograph primarily in the areas with the best natural light and the most space. This is usually the master bedroom, living room, or nursery.

A few helpful notes:

  • Light bedding photographs beautifully—think whites, creams, and soft neutrals
  • There’s no need for a deep clean; we’ll only be in a couple of rooms
  • Decluttering surfaces is helpful, but don’t stress—I’m always happy to move items if needed

Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine. It just needs to look like you.

Warm Up the House

Babies are happiest (and sleepiest!) when they’re warm. If possible, set your thermostat to around 75–80°F about 30 minutes before your session. This is especially helpful if we’ll be changing outfits or using wraps during your New Jersey lifestyle newborn session

Preparing Your Family for Your Newborn Photography Session

Dad

You’ll absolutely be part of the session, though not the entire time. Expect to be “on” for about 20–30 minutes, with breaks to help with siblings or baby between photos.

Siblings

Let siblings know that a friendly photographer is coming to take fun photos of their new baby. Keeping it casual and positive helps them feel relaxed and excited.

Mom

Please give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. Truly. I want you to feel calm, unrushed, and cared for during your Bergen County lifestyle newborn photography session. Planning an extra hour allows time for feeding, breaks, and simply enjoying the moment.

Baby

A full belly works wonders. A fresh diaper helps too. If feeding when I arrive feels best, that’s perfect—I’ll use that time to set up and find the best natural light in your home.

What to Wear for Lifestyle Newborn Photos

Mom

Soft, simple neutrals photograph beautifully. Think white, cream, oatmeal, gray, blush, or light sage. Flowy dresses or cozy knit tops work wonderfully. Avoid busy prints or bold logos.

You’re always welcome to borrow from my client closet—just let me know what styles you love.

Dad

Neutral pieces that coordinate with mom work best. Solid tees, henleys, or button-ups paired with jeans, chinos, or khakis photograph timelessly.

Siblings

Simple colors without logos or loud patterns are ideal. Dresses, rompers, and soft tees in neutral tones keep the focus on connection.

Everyone

Have one backup outfit nearby—just in case of spills or diaper surprises.

What to Expect During Your Bergen County Newborn Session

When I Arrive

I’ll bring in my gear, take a quick look around your home, and identify the best pockets of natural light. I’ll also walk you through how the session will flow. We usually begin photographing about 15–20 minutes after I arrive, so there’s no need to rush when I knock on the door.

Where We Begin

Most New Jersey lifestyle newborn photography sessions begin in the master bedroom with cozy family snuggles on the bed. From there, we follow the light—often moving into the living room or nursery.

I love capturing:

  • Parents curled up with their baby
  • Siblings peeking into the bassinet
  • Family cuddles on the couch
  • Nursery details that make the space special

Every detail you chose with love—blankets, heirlooms, hand-me-downs, and décor—helps tell your baby’s story.

Feeding & Breaks

Newborn sessions move at baby’s pace. We’ll pause for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and cuddles as often as needed.

If possible, keeping baby awake for a short time before I arrive can help them settle into a sleepy state during the session—but if that doesn’t happen, it’s completely okay. Real life always comes first.

Props & Baby Outfits

If you have meaningful outfits, handmade pieces, or special items you’d like included, just let me know when I arrive so I can plan them naturally into the session.

I also bring a curated collection of wraps, blankets, and simple newborn pieces that you’re welcome to use during your lifestyle newborn photography session in New Jersey.

A Note from Your New Jersey Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

These early days are tender, messy, and unbelievably precious. My goal is to honor them exactly as they are while giving you a relaxed, beautiful experience.

You don’t need a spotless home, a perfectly calm baby, or a full night’s sleep. You just need to show up and love on your little one.

I’ll take care of the rest. 💛
