What is a Doula or a Birth Coach?
During pregnancy, one of the most common terms we hear is a Doula.
What is a Birth Doula?
A doula – or a Birth Coach, is a non-medical professional, trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth.
Doulas are trained and have the ability to provide comfort with pain-relief techniques including breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, massage, and laboring positions. Doulas also encourage participation from the partner and offer reassurance. Studies have shown that women who have had a Doula present with them during childbirth, have
reported having a more positive childbirth experience.
Do I need a Doula?
Whether or not you want to hire a Doula is a personal choice made by the expecting mom and their partner. Some people prefer keeping everything in the hands of medical personnel, others are open to non-medical trained professionals who are able to provide emotional support and be their go-to support system when needed.
Finding a Doula:
The key to choosing a doula is to find a person with whom you feel comfortable. Most do not charge for an initial consultation, so take the time to interview as many as necessary until you find a good match who you feel comfortable with.
